March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to recognize the strengths and contributions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and highlight the importance of community participation. At Burke, our Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Program supports individuals and families across East Texas with services that promote independence, strengthen daily living skills, and expand opportunities for meaningful community involvement.
Burke serves as both an IDD Authority and Provider, offering service coordination, guidance, and direct supports throughout our region. Whether families are exploring services for the first time or navigating long-term supports, our staff helps them understand options and access the resources they need.
What We Offer
Burke’s IDD services are designed to support individuals at every stage of life. Services may include:
- Service coordination
- Day habilitation
- Supported employment
- Residential supports
- Connections to community resources
Together, these services help individuals build skills, increase independence, and participate in everyday community life.
Supporting Individuals and Families
Navigating services can feel overwhelming for families. Burke’s IDD teams provide clear guidance, practical support, and ongoing coordination to help individuals and caregivers plan for the future and access the services they need.
“Our role is to help individuals and families locate the services, resources, and opportunities that improve quality of life,” said Stephanie Yates, Director of IDD Operations.
Community Participation Matters
Burke works with local employers, organizations, and community partners to create opportunities for individuals with IDD to work, volunteer, build relationships, and take part in everyday activities.
“People with IDD deserve the same opportunities as anyone else to participate in their communities,” Yates said. “When individuals are active in workplaces and community settings, it builds understanding and helps create stronger communities.”
