John Howard grew up in Center, TX, and graduated from high school there before attending Lamar University, where he studied industrial engineering. After working in Fort Worth for several years, he returned home to join the family business.
Our business started in poultry and evolved into poultry supply and hardware. We built poultry houses, installed equipment, and provided supplies for producers. I spent most of my time in a financial role, managing accounting and operations, and ensuring everything stayed on track.
How did you first get involved with Burke?
I was asked to join the board in 2004 by a previous Shelby County representative who was moving out of the area. He encouraged me to take his place, and that’s how I got involved.
What was your first impression of Burke?
I didn’t realize how large the organization was at the time. It has grown significantly over the years, and I’ve come to better understand the full scope of services Burke provides across the region.
What do you wish other people knew about Burke?
I think it’s important for people to understand both what Burke provides and what it cannot provide. There are still many people who may not realize these services are available, especially in more rural areas like Shelby County.
What do you think will change about Burke (or the MH/IDD service realm) over the next five years?
Mental health continues to be an important topic, especially given everything we see in the news. I hope that increased awareness leads to more funding and expanded services to meet the growing need.
How would someone describe you?
I think most people would say I’m a numbers person. I like things to add up and balance out, and I tend to be organized and detail-oriented.
What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
Outside of Burke, I enjoy golfing and spending time with my family. I come from a large family, and many of us still live in the area, so we stay close. My wife and I have a blended family with three daughters and eight grandchildren. I’m also active in the Lions Club, serve as treasurer of my church, and stay involved in other local civic efforts.
